About Drexel University College of Engineering

The rapid advances and evolving challenges in our world necessitate engineers who can think broadly, adjust quickly and act decisively. That’s why our focus at Drexel University is empowering students to engineer change – in their lives and through their careers – by emphasizing a balance of theory and practical experience.

For more than 130 years, our programs have been taught by academic and industry experts, who guide students through hands-on learning in classrooms, participation in research and in our renowned co-op program. Our students are technically trained, adaptable engineers who advance from their studies dedicated to the practice and discovery of sustainable solutions to humanity’s greatest challenges. Since its beginning, engineering has been the cornerstone of Drexel, and our students, faculty and alumni produce robust research, integrate emerging engineering practices and innovate for positive change in our world.

History

In 1891, philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel launched the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry, envisioning a place that would evolve as the world around it grew, consistently teaching young men and women the skills they needed to thrive in a demanding, everchanging workforce. From its earliest days, engineering was part of the fabric of Drexel.

The first engineering courses were offered on campus in 1893 and by the turn of the century, Drexel launched the Department of Electrical Engineering, which grew within a decade to become the School of Engineering.

Drexel’s first Bachelor of Science in Engineering was established in 1914 as a four-year degree program and matriculated three students. Shortly after in 1919, Drexel’s very first co-op began with 152 engineering students. In 1945, the school became a college and within four years began offering graduate programs, eventually becoming by 1963 one of the first colleges at Drexel to offer a doctoral program.
